Long before cannabis became connected to marijuana prohibition, dispensaries, modern legalization, or medical cannabis, it had another identity in early America: hemp.
In this episode of Cannabis History, we explore how hemp became tied to Colonial America, the British Empire, the Atlantic trade system, and the rise of the Thirteen Colonies. During the Age of Sail, empire depended on ships, and ships depended on materials like hemp rope, sailcloth, canvas, cordage, timber, tar, pitch, and other naval stores.
This documentary follows hemp through the world of English colonization, from Jamestown and the Virginia Company to the Navigation Acts, Parliament’s hemp and flax bounties, and the colonial laws that encouraged planters to grow fiber crops. We look at why hemp was considered a strategic crop, why Britain wanted the American colonies to produce raw materials, and how hemp fit into the larger imperial supply chain.
We also look at important figures connected to hemp in Colonial America, including William Byrd II and George Washington, who saw hemp as more than just a plant. To planters, merchants, and lawmakers, hemp represented rope, canvas, trade, naval power, and possible profit.
But the story does not end with ships and empire. Hemp was also a labor-intensive crop. Before it could become usable fiber, it had to be planted, harvested, retted, broken, scutched, and hackled. In plantation regions like Virginia, that work was often done by indentured servants and enslaved laborers.
That means the history of hemp in Colonial America is not just a story about cannabis, rope, ships, and trade. It is also a story about labor, coercion, force, and the human cost behind the materials that helped build the Atlantic world.
From imperial supply chains to plantation labor, this is one of the most important forgotten chapters in American cannabis history.
