In 1896, Ethiopia beat a European colonial invasion outright — the only African nation to do it. Forty years later, Italy came back to finish what it started, this time with aircraft, tanks, and a chemical weapon banned by international law. Emperor Haile Selassie stood before the League of Nations in person and warned them exactly what was coming if they let it go unanswered. They applauded.
