In 1936, Mussolini’s army drove Ethiopia’s emperor into exile using poison gas against a country still fighting largely with rifles and spears. Booed before he even spoke, Haile Selassie stood before the League of Nations and warned the world: “It is us today. It will be you tomorrow.” Nobody listened. Three years later, they were at war too.
