The Real Power Behind Ghana’s Economy Isn’t In Parliament
Ghana’s richest families control wheat flour, luxury real estate, gold mining, and media — and most Ghanaians have never heard their names. Five powerful dynasties built billion-dollar empires on essential industries while staying completely out of the spotlight. This video exposes who they are, how they built it, and what it means for Ghana’s economy and Africa’s future.
Ghana has elections, presidents, and parliaments. But the families controlling your daily bread, the land under Accra’s most expensive addresses, the radio stations speaking your language every morning, and the gold that put Ghana on Wall Street — they don’t campaign. They don’t need to.
We investigated five dynasties: the Irani family, who control roughly 60% of Ghana’s wheat flour market through Irani Brothers & Others Ltd, founded in 1967. The Taricone family, Italian-origin builders of Trasacco Valley and the Villaggio Vista tower — Ghana’s tallest residential building — who arrived with nothing in 1968 and are now worth an estimated $1.3 billion. Sir Sam Jonah and the Jonah family, whose journey from underground miner to CEO of Ashanti Goldfields to listing the first African company on the New York Stock Exchange is one of the most extraordinary stories in African business history. Osei Kwame Despite, who went from selling cassettes to building Peace FM, UTV, and a media and consumer goods empire worth close to a billion dollars. And the Awuah-Darko family, who turned a law that destroyed their brokerage business into the foundation of Ghana’s first indigenous private insurance company.
Each family found one thing people couldn’t stop needing. They moved early, stayed quiet, and played a very long game.
This is not a rich list. It is a power map.
