On the 1st of March, 1896, an African army destroyed a European one in open battle — and forced the empire that sent it to recognize Ethiopia as a sovereign equal. While nearly the entire continent was being divided among foreign capitals, this one highland nation stayed free. It is the reason Ethiopia keeps its own alphabet, its own church, and a calendar that runs seven to eight years behind the rest of the world.

a cradle of humankind where the ancestor we call Lucy was found, and home to eleven churches carved downward out of solid rock eight hundred years ago. Its highlands shelter creatures found nowhere else — the grass-eating gelada, the rarest wild dog on Earth — above a desert hot enough to seem like another planet.
