Ethiopians Celebrate the 85th Anniversary of the Defeat of Fascist Italy During ‘Victory Day’
Thousands of Ethiopians gathered at the Miazia 27 Square in Addis Ababa on Tuesday to mark the 85th anniversary of Patriots’ Victory Day, commemorating the end of five years of fascist Italian occupation and the restoration of national sovereignty.
Footage shows crowds waving flags and performing traditional dances. President Taye Atske Selassie later led ceremonies at the Arat Kilo monument, laying a wreath and saluting veterans who had resisted Mussolini’s forces between 1936 and 1941.
In his address, Selassie emphasised that Ethiopia celebrates ‘Victory Day’ rather than Independence Day, as the nation was never colonised.
