Lalibela, a town in northern Ethiopia, is one of the most remarkable pilgrimage sites in the Christian world. Set high in the Lasta mountains, it is known for its stunning rock-hewn churches carved directly into the reddish volcanic rock, creating an otherworldly landscape that feels both ancient and alive.
The town’s fame comes from eleven monolithic churches built in the 12th and 13th centuries under King Lalibela, who sought to create a “New Jerusalem” for pilgrims who could not travel to the Holy Land. Each church is connected by tunnels and trenches, some sunken deep into the ground, so that visitors often descend into narrow passages before emerging into open courtyards facing beautifully carved facades.
The most iconic of these is Bete Giyorgis (the Church of Saint George), recognizable from above by its striking cross-shaped roof. Carved in a single piece out of solid rock, it stands in a deep pit with steep walls, giving visitors the impression of stepping into a hidden sanctuary. Inside, the dim light, incense, and soft chanting of priests create a powerful spiritual atmosphere.
Lalibela is not just an archaeological wonder; it is a living religious center. Priests in white robes, pilgrims with wooden staffs, and locals moving quietly between churches give the site a sense of continuity, as if little has changed in centuries. Religious festivals such as Genna (Ethiopian Christmas) draw thousands of worshippers, filling the town with singing, prayer, and candlelight.
Surrounding Lalibela, the highland scenery adds to the town’s magic. Terraced fields, rugged cliffs, and distant mountain ridges frame the churches, especially at sunrise and sunset when the rocks glow warm shades of orange and red. For visitors, Lalibela offers not only a journey into Ethiopia’s deep Christian heritage but also an unforgettable experience of architecture, faith, and landscape coming together in one extraordinary place.
