This video shows a friendly Amharic language competition between sisters intended to improve their spoken Amharic, thereby serving as a useful resource for families teaching their children Amharic. The competition includes sounding out relatively harder Amharic words, saying the negative word for the affirmative (some gender specific), saying the plural for singular words and naming colors in Amharic. The vocally harder Amharic words to sound out for children in this video include እግዚአብሔር (God), ኢትዮጵያ (Ethiopia), ዩኒቨርሲቲ (University), አያት ቅድመአያት (forefathers), and ጰራቅሊጦስ (Paraclete/Holy Spirit). Except አያት ቅድመአያት the root for all the other words is not Amharic. Nevertheless they have been adapted from other languages and are widely used in the Amharic language today. እግዚአብሔር (God), ኢትዮጵያ (Ethiopia) & ዩኒቨርሲቲ (University) are some of the most frequently used words in the Amharic language. The purpose of the video is to encourage families to use similar approach in teaching their children spoken Amharic. More similar videos to come.
