Organic Agriculture in Dominica
In 2006, a small group of farmers on the Caribbean island of Dominica launched the Dominican Organic Agriculture Movement (DOAM). From what began as not much more than a good idea, with the support of the Chemonics implemented USAID Caribbean Open Trade Support program, the organization now provides training courses and has created a burgeoning organic community on the island. Farmers like Roy Orman learn the fundamentals of growing crops organically as well as the broader steps necessary to achieve organic certification. As its influence grows, DOAM is also helping the Government of Dominica meet its commitment to having a national agriculture industry free of chemical inputs by 2015.
