Silent Reel: 1960 General Mengistu Neway Caught, Tried & Hung for treason against H.I.M.
Brigadier General Mengistu Neway was the commander of the Ethiopian Imperial Guard during the reign of Emperor Haile Selassie
In 1960 General Mengistu and his younger brother Germame Neway also others tried a coup attempt to over throw Emperor Haile Selassie from power. But, by 19 December the coup was crushed. Both brothers tried to run away but 24 December 1960 the army surrounded them near Mojo. Rather than face capture, Germame Neway committed suicide; General Mengistu Neway surrendered. He was put on trial and sentenced to die by hanging. The Emperor approved the death penalty to be carried out. General Mengistu was hanged a few months later, on 30th March,1961. The dead body of his young brother was hanged next to him.
