Rastafari Farmers and Organic Agriculture in Suriname
Natural food plays a major role within Rastafari Livity. It is called ITAL, mainly a vegetarian lifestyle, avoiding chemical additives as much as possible. From the start of the movement , Rastas grew their own food without chemical fertilizers and chemical pesticides, in one word, ORGANIC.
In this age of fast food, genetically modified food (GMO) and the ever increasing use of chemical additives in our daily food, an increasing number of Rastas return to the countryside to grow their own food. They simply don’t trust industrial food any more.
These planters don’t receive an extra charge for their organic products. A distribution network which guarantee both quality and fair price for the planter and consumer needs to be developed.
