thiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has sacked the Army Chief, head of Intelligence and Foreign Minister.
The central government in Addis Ababa has launched a military operation in the northern region of Tigray.
The offensive comes after months of growing tensions between the federal government and Tigray’s governing TPLF party.
Abiy Ahmed has accused the TPLF of attempting to undermine his leadership and moved to dissolve its regional government.
But those in Tigray say Abiy Ahmed is not a legitimate leader since he postponed elections this year – due to COVID-19.
So, is there a risk of escalation?
