The Weeknd’s “The Knowing”
This music video begins with Haile Selassie I speaking. It shows Ethiopie (Ethiopia) and then Addis-Abeba in August 1974. We then see Haile Selassie standing beside Mengistu, who is holding a gun with the same type of vehicle used to collect Haile Selassie when He was overthrown. It then shows a man standing by the temple of Lalibela with the Ark of the Covenant. Both the man and the ark later disappear. The location of the music video is Planet Ethio X in AD 16311. A man’s heart is then extracted from his body while he lies in the crucified position. A woman tries to destroy the heart, but it grows the more she tries. She then drops the heart into the pit, where there is a lion sleeping that then pushes the heart back to the woman. She is mortified further.
While the heart continues to grow and the building is destroying itself, the man regains his heart and in the blink of an eye turns into Haile Selassie I. He trieds to save the woman, but she falls into the opening of the floor. “Now depicted as a Christlike figure even the animals submit to him” (Selassie was said to ride a lion as a child”. His heart was strong and only knew love,s o it was stronger than the woman’s scorn and hatred. After the woman’s numerous failed attempts at destroying Abel’s heart, He arrives on her planet to retrieve his heart while weeping for her; Selassie was said to “weep for His people” (Visit Rap Genius for Songs Lyrics). As Haile Selassie said, “The Church is not merely a building. The Church is the faithful fulfillment of the Christian life and its requirements. Thus, as the name applies to the buildings so is our heart the Church in which God dwells.”
