Count Ossie performing for Emperor Haile Selassie I in Jamaica 1966
On the occasion of Emperor Selassie’s April 1966 66 visit to Jamaica.
Count Ossie brought Nyabinghi drumming to Jamaican music in the early 1960s, infusing the new-born ska / rocksteady / reggae musical style with a solid connection to African tribal consciousness.
In the clip, Ossie is seen performing, as well as meeting Our Emperor and being given a gold medal. Record producer & future Prime Minister Edward Seaga is seen in a brief shot too. Then Ossie & his band perform for the King. Crucial!
