1954, June 19: H.I.M. Emperor Haile Selassie, The First African Leader to Officially Visit Mexico
RasTafari TV Network Presents, H.I.M. Haile Selassie I & Ethiopia–Mexico Relations and The Spirit of International Brotherhood of
The Lion of Judah in Mexico.
H.I.M. Emperor Haile Selassie I visited Mexico on June 19, 1954. The only country in Africa that has never been colonized by a European power is Ethiopia.
Italian forces invaded Ethiopia in 1935, defeated the Ethiopian army, and then gained control of it for the five years that followed. This conflict was referred to as the Second Italian-Ethiopian War. Mexico was one of only five League of Nations members to denounce the Italian invasion and occupation of Ethiopia. Ethiopia remained a member and preserved its seat in the assembly as a result. Ethiopia and Mexico established diplomatic ties in 1949, a few years after the end of World War II. Emperor Haile Selassie became the first ever African head of state to pay an official visit to Mexico.
Since that time, until today, Mexico and Ethiopia have been one family. We will never forget the Mexican delegation’s virtuous and fraternal spirit, which it created in support of Ethiopia’s sacred rights.
