The Commandment Keepers, Black Jews

Spread the love

The Commandment Keepers is a feature documentary on a highly observant African American synagogue founded by Rabbi Wentworth A. Matthew in 1919 in Harlem, where it carried on more than 90 years. The film is the dramatic story of a people caught between two often-conflicting worlds, Black and Jewish, who struggle to hold on to their faith and identity despite the obstacles.

The film is in postproduction in an advanced cut (this cut is more contrasty than the finished film, and its archival footage and soundtrack, by Sussan Deyhim, is currently dubbed). It is currently seeking completion funding.
